![]() ![]() About UsPamela Winfield![]() T.R.A.C.E. - Transatlantic Children's Enterprise, is a self-help group founded by the late Pamela Winfield MBE in 1986 Pamela, the organisation's first president, created T.R.A.C.E. in order to help re-unite the children of American soldiers who were in Britain during World War Two. Pamela was herself a G.I. bride and met her husband 'Red' in London. They married and with their baby son, David, went to live as a naval wife in the U.S.A. They were also stationed in Germany where she worked as a kindergarten teacher for a while. Sadly Pamela's husband was killed in a car crash and she returned to England with her son and settled in Surbiton, Surrey with her second husband, Bernard. Pamela was the author of many books, among them SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY about G.I. brides, BYE BYE BABY and MELANCHOLY BABY, both of which were compilations of stories about the children that were left behind in WW2 and the impact it had on them. She also co-wrote IT'S ONLY A GAME, with Miss Whiplash, the notorious brothel owner. T.R.A.C.E. was Pamela's life work. She assisted hundreds of families with their quest to finally meet their biological fathers and their families. Since it's early days, T.R.A.C.E. has broadened its assistance and now helps those from later years who are searching for their fathers/families in addition to giving help and advice from further afield. She once said of the G.I.'s arrival in WW2: "Unless men land here from the moon, the arrival of the G.I.s and the impact it had on the women will never be the same again!" In February 2004 Pamela went to Buckingham Palace to receive her M.B.E. from the Queen for services to T.R.A.C.E. It was the highlight of her extraordinary life. She was very touched to receive this award. ![]() Without Pamela founding T.R.A.C.E. in the days before the internet, many of us would have not found our fathers/families. Many of us would not be offering support and encouragement to each other as we have today. Pamela's name continues to be remembered, both through her writing, and by those who knew her. Pamela's granddaughter, Phillipa, is a dance teacher and opened her own dance school soon after her Pamela's passing. She chose to honour her grandmother by naming it the Pamela Winfield School of Dance. |
